Maungatautari Mountain Reserve & Walking Tracks

Maungatautari - an internationally significant restoration project, this 3,400 hectare forested, extinct volcano stands majestically on the landscape in the Waikato basin, between Cambridge, Te Awamutu and Putaruru, in the central North Island of New Zealand. Takahe, kiwi, kaka (birds) and kokopu (fish) have already been reintroduced to two pest free enclosures! 

 

OUR VISION IS...

To remove forever, introduced mammalian pests and predators from Maungatautari,

and restore to the forest a healthy diversity of indigenous plants

and animals not seen in our lifetime.   Maungatautari after dark ... Superb two course dinner at the Out in the Styx Guesthouse, Pukeatua, followed by a guided walk in the pest free forest. Pre-set dinner and guided walk $90 per person (min 4 people, max 10 people) 10% discount for Maungatautari members. Dress warmly with good walking shoes. Good fitness required. Headlamps supplied. Completion of a metalled service track on Maungatautari is good news for visitors wanting to walk across the 3,400 hectare mountain.    Maungatautari Trust staff and volunteers have extended the current 1.4m wide metalled service track from the base of Pukeatua peak to Maungatautari peak so that the all-weather track now runs the 7.4km from Tari Road to Maungatautari peak.
